Jack Ferver: Performance Composition
Jack Ferver’s practice as an instructor develops the mind and body of the student to
channel their own unique expression, their psyche, into movement and text based
performance work. First toning the vehicle of the body through stretch and placement
techniques, followed by core work, students are then prepared to enter into impulse based
improvisation techniques to find their authentic movement as well as push past physical
limitations. Through various writing exercises, text work is built. Both choreography
and text are then dramaturgically investigated. Performance levels are explored, which
also includes vocal work. Whether the performing act is simple or heightened, a
grounding in honesty is always demanded. Through the process, students discover not
only what they want to say artistically, but also how most affectively say it.
He currently teaches at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
